Coggan Family History

constans fidei

Hi and welcome to my family history website.

I was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England and assumed that my Coggan ancestors had been there for a long time. Wrong! After some research I soon found that this "Northern" branch of the Coggan's came from the Isle of Axholme, Lincolnshire, just east of Doncaster. Parish Records show that the Coggan's were present in the Isle by the 1300's.

The other major branch of Coggan's is to be found in the West country, especially Somerset & Devon. This is much closer to the Welsh "village" where the family name probaly arises (see: Cogan near Penarth). There is some evidence to show that the two branches are linked.

My research so far has concentrated on the "Northern" branch and I still have much more work to do there, however, I have just started to add West Country records.

I hope you find something of interest, but if you find any errors (there will be some), omissions, or want further information, then please do write to me - just click on the "Contact" tab at the top of this page for my address.
