Coggan Family History

This website is changing!!

Previous versions had focussed on research into my broad family history i.e. my ancestors and their relatives. The site is now changing into a "One Name Study" of the Coggan family name, and the variants Cogan, de Cogan and Coggon.

I joined the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) in 2021 and will be developing this site using their guidance.

I was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England and assumed that my Coggan ancestors had been there for a long time. Wrong! After some research I soon found that this "Northern" branch of the Coggan's came from the Isle of Axholme, Lincolnshire, just east of Doncaster. Records show that the Coggan's were present in the Isle in the 1300's.

The other major branch of Coggan's is to be found in the West Country, especially Somerset & Devon. This is much closer to the Welsh "village" where the family name probably arose (see: Cogan near Penarth). There is some evidence to show that the two branches are linked.

Please bear with me in this new venture, it will take some time to develop this revised site.
